There are a number of allergy drugs.  Here are some of them:

1. Benadryl.  This is available over the counter.  It is apparantly effective if you are looking for instant relief.  It is effective in the instance of getting over hay fever symptoms and stuffy nose.

2. Clarinex.  There are some forms that you can take over the counter, but you still should ask your doctor if you would be safe doing so. Clarinex can help with runny nose, red and watery eyes, sneezing and coughing.

3. Sudafed. Not many doctors would recommend that you take too much of Sudafed. Even though this is an over the counter drug, this drug can be pretty dangerous for other uses. However, this drug is known to help with symptoms of stuffy nose and other nasal passage symptoms.

However, with any drug you will want to check out the side effects. Most of these allergy drug medications can cause you drowsiness and hence, you may not wish to take them during the day.  Also, not all drug medications may work for you.  What works on another of your family member may not work on you.

Also, some drugs lose their effectiveness over time.  If you consume too much of drug medications, you may need higher and higer dosages for the same amount of itch and pain.

You also need to be aware that drug medications tend to be symptomatic reliefs.  They do not help cure or address the root of your problems.  When you are exposed to the allergens again, you may get another inflammatory reaction of which you may need another dose of medications to fight it.  Prevention or avoidance of allergens can help to reduce your symptoms.  You may also want to look into natural allergy treatments as complementary or alternative measures.

Allergy medication Benadryl is a very commonly used drug for hay fever. However, this allergy medication has many perks and downfalls. Before taking Benadryl, please check with your doctor if it is safe for you to consume it because it may interact with your other current medication.

Although hay fever is something that you do not want to tolerate, the side effects of taking Benedryl may be something that you do not also want. One possible side effect from taking Benedryl is that you become tired and drowsy after taking it.   Although you can find relief from hay fever symptoms pretty quickly, it can make you fall asleep and without warning. This is not an allergy medication that you will want to take and then go to work.

Over time, can also lose its effectiveness.  This happens when you rely on these medications.  You would find that you need stronger prescription medications to have the same amount of relief.

Some people choose to move one form of allergy medication to another.  Other commonly known allergy medications include Sudafed and Clarinex.  Some other allergy medications are only available upon prescription by your doctor.

You would also need to find out from your doctor if you need to make certain lifestyle changes if you should want to take allergy medications.  For instance, you may need to avoid the sun, in case of certain allergic responses.

Consider also preventative measures as well as other alternative treatments to reduce your dependence on taking allergy medications.  An allergy medication can help provide you with instant relief.  But over a long period of time, the less drugs you have in your body,  the better would be your immune system and health.
