Here are 10 tips to relief:

1. Comb through each room for any corner that may harbor dust. Take out items under the bed, contents of the closet, and any other ‘dust collectors’.  Find ways to store these items without accumulating dust.  You can use plastic bags or sealed plastic bins for storage.

2. Remove loose carpet and clean and scrub woodwork and floors.  Regularly clean with a vacuum equipped with a filter for allergens.

3. Clean floors, furniture, door frames, window sills, ‘knick knacks’, books, and any other items with a cloth that is somewhat damp or oiled, depending on what you are cleaning.

4. Wash bedding, pillows, throw rugs, curtains or any upholstered item every week.  Use hot water to kill dust mites.

5. Refrain from leaving dirty laundry in the bedroom.  This is a perfect place for dust to collect and for dead skin to hide.

6. Purchase an air filter to remove airborne allergens and to keep dust out of the room.

7. Dust mites love to accumulate on mattresses and pillows. It is difficult to clean them weekly.  Fortunately, there are inexpensive covers that can be purchased that are specially designed to zip around pillows and mattresses and they keep dust mites out.

8. Clutter in children’s rooms can pose a danger. Heaps of toys and stuffed animals can make a place for dust to collect.  If you do not want to spend money on organizers, you can put up inexpensive shelves and organize toys in plastic bins on the shelves so that the room can be cleaned every week without taking out all of the toys.

9. Clean your car regularly. Use a vacuum attachment, or the vacuum at the gas station, to clean the upholstery. There are also small air filters that are made to plug into the adapter and work in a car.

10. Even though you take steps to get dust mite allergy relief, sometimes nasal congestion gets uncomfortable.  A saline spray can provide instant relief.  Take ½ teaspoon of salt and dissolve it in ½ cup of lukewarm water.  You can spray it with a bulb or other type of syringe into the nose.  Over the counter saline sprays can have a bitter taste and smell because of the preservatives and it is very easy to make your own at home.

Although dust is present everywhere, it is possible to reduce symptoms of dust mite allergy.  By making some adjustments, you will find that your allergies are much easier to control.
