Dust Mite Allergy Prevention
I have had dust mite allergy and not realised it for a long time. Then, one day, it just dawned on me that I must be sensitive because my skin will tingle and I will get a severe rash developing when I sit on carpets or when my room gets a little dusty. Dust mites are really microscopic organisms that live in our carpets, rugs or upholstery and that feed on the dead skin that falls from our bodies.
A dust mite allergy is not really an allergic reaction to the dustmites per se. A dust mite allergy is one whereby you are allergic to the waste and by products of the dust mites.
Wonder why you itch more at night? Well, you may have the company of dust mites. How then do you ensure that you are dust mites free?
Well, the truth is that it is pretty hard to keep your home 100% free from dust mites. Most sanitized homes also contain them. It is however, still important that you take steps to reduce them.
Ensure that you vaccum your home frequently. Even then, not any ordinary vaccuum cleaner will do. You need to use one that with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter. Also, wash your upholstery, rugs and carpets in hot water at least once a week. Avoid getting carpets with fur that can easily make a home for the dust mites to thrive in. I’ve given up on carpets once I realised my skin sensitivity. I’ve switched to having just hardwood flooring.
