Celiac disease often forms due to a gluten allergy. Celiac disease is a disease in the intestinal tract that can cause severe symptoms all over the body, including arthritis, lung inflammation, and dysfunction of the brain. This disease is very serious, so it is important that you take note of early symptoms. Some of the symptoms of celiac are diarrhea, malnutrition, weight loss, bloating, and abdominal pain. It can also cause growth problems in children due to the impact of poor nutrient absorption.
Gluten is the mixture of proteins found in some cereals, including wheat, rye and barley. It is harmful to sufferers as it can damage the lining of the small intestine, preventing the body from absorbing nutrients. Symptoms are diarrhea and can also lead to malnutrition. Gluten allergy is fast becomming a very common problem.
Celiac disease is often diagnosed after weaning, when cereals are introduced into the diet, although it can also be diagnosed at a later age.
It is also found that patients of certain medical condtions such as Type 1 diabetes, thyroid problems, ulcerative colitis are at greater risk of developing a gluten allergy.
No cure for celiac disease appears to exist. Hence, an avoidance diet is best. All foods containing gluten eg. wheat, rye, barley, malt, malt extract, malt flavoring, beer and lager should be off the menu.
More and more products are now gluten-free. Manufactuerers are finding that the large number of people with a gluten allergy has made it worthwhile to produce foods for this group of sufferers.
