If you take your allergy drugs such as fexofenadine (Allegra), loratadine (Claritin) or astemizole (Histama), make sure you do not take them with grapefruit juice.
Why grapefruit juice? Grapefruit contains high levels of naringin, a bioflavnoid, which allows more of certain druges to be absorbed into your bloodstream. This means that you are essentially absorbing a higher dosage even though you may have consumed the standard amount. Side effects such as drowsiness or excitability can be experienced.
While a single glass of grapefruit juice can last 24 hours, several glasses of juice per day can have a cumulative effect.
What about other fruit juice? No other fruit juice is known to produce the same effects. Still, it is recommended that if you need to take medication, stick to water.
